How Cruise Card Points Work
Earning, redeeming and the difference from loyalty status.
Get Free Cruise QuotesHow Cruise Credit Card Points Work
Every cruise card program has its own numbers, but they all work the same way: you earn points on purchases, usually more on the cruise line’s own charges, and redeem them for that line’s cruises or onboard spending, sometimes for other things too.
| Step | How it usually works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Earning | A base rate on everyday spending, a higher rate on the cruise brand | Which charges count as the cruise brand (fare, onboard, pre-cruise) |
| Bonus offers | Extra points after a spending threshold | Current terms only on the issuer’s page |
| Redeeming | Money off a cruise, onboard credit, sometimes other travel or cash | Minimum redemption and value per point |
| Applying | Credit is added to a booking or account | Timing, and whether it works on agency bookings |
| Expiry | Varies by program | What happens if you close the card |
General information, not financial advice. Card names and features were checked on the issuers’ and cruise lines’ own pages in October 2026 and can change at any time. We do not list rates, fees or bonus offers, we do not take applications, and we are not paid by any card issuer. Always compare the current terms on the issuer’s own website before you apply.
Card Points vs Loyalty Status
Card points and cruise loyalty status are separate. Status in programs such as Crown & Anchor Society, Carnival Rewards or Latitudes Rewards is earned mostly by cruising, and brings onboard perks. Card points are a currency you spend. On some programs card spending can also help toward status; check the line’s rules.

Getting the Most From Cruise Card Points
- Redeem for things you would buy anyway — a drinks package, Wi-Fi, an excursion.
- Ask whether points can be applied to a booking made through a travel advisor, and how.
- Combine card credit with the line’s promotions, if the terms allow. See current offers at Wave Season.
- Keep the card account and the cruise booking in the same name.

Common Points Mistakes
Saving forever
Programs change. Points earned for a cruise you never book lose their purpose.
Redeeming at low value
Some options, such as merchandise, may return less per point than cruise credit. Compare.
Forgetting the timing
Credit may need to be applied before final payment or before sailing.
Mixing up accounts
Points belong to the cardholder; check rules if the cruise is booked in another name.
Points on a Family Cruise
When a family shares a cabin or books several cabins, decide in advance whose card pays for what. Points usually land with whoever pays, and onboard credit from a redemption is often applied to a specific booking or account. Matching the payer, the booking and the onboard account keeps the credits where you expect them.
